Rolling Stones – Let It Bleed
1969 – London Records
So I’m going to put this out there, I’ve never really listened to, or have been interested in, the Rolling Stones. Nothing I had ever heard really jumped out at me that made me want to dig in. But since they are such a big band, when a friend was culling through his records and offered me this one I figured I might as well see if I can figure out what the fuss is all about. Listening through this album, it is more bluesy than I expected, which I like. I was only exposed to the hits, which are good, but some of the bluesy musicianship that covers the rest of the album (at least this one) is great. They are laid back and don’t rush anything, making the most out of these tunes. They clearly spent some time listening to and studying the blues masters. That being said, I would rather hear some blues greats play the music. There is nothing wrong with this album, in fact it is very good. But, I still don’t really understand why they are such a huge band. Perhaps I need to dig into some of their other albums, or not. This is good to put on once in a while, but I can’t imagine it’s going to be a regular fixture on my turntable. I’m going to get some Muddy Waters, Bessie Smith, and Leadbelly and dig into them instead.
